Professional vs. DIY Christmas lights: the honest comparison

We install Christmas lights for a living, so you'd expect this article to end with "hire us." It does — but you deserve the honest version of the comparison, including the cases where DIY genuinely makes sense.

What DIY really costs

The store receipt is the visible part: strands, clips, extension cords, timers, and the replacement strands for the ones that die in the box between seasons. The invisible costs are bigger:

• Time. A ladder-and-clips roofline job on an average home eats most of a weekend day — more for two stories, more again in January when enthusiasm is gone and the take-down happens grudgingly (or in February).

Honesty means saying it: a single-story ranch with easy rooflines, a modest display, a homeowner who enjoys the ritual and is steady on a ladder — DIY works fine there, and no installer should pretend otherwise. Ground-level displays (shrubs, path lights, door garland) are safe, satisfying DIY for anyone.

• Two-story rooflines, steep pitches, or any install your gut hesitates about
• Displays you want designed — proportioned to the architecture, not to cord length
• Seasonal residents who won't be here for install or removal windows
• Businesses and HOAs, where reliability and documentation matter
• Anyone whose December is worth more than the labor savings
