Pressure washing vs. soft washing: which one does your home actually need?

Both, probably — just never on the same surfaces. This single distinction separates careful exterior cleaners from companies that will genuinely damage your home, so it's worth two minutes to understand.

What each method is

Pressure washing uses water at high pressure to mechanically strip grime from hard, durable surfaces. Done properly, it uses a surface cleaner (that spinning circular attachment) for even coverage, with pressure dialed to the material.

Soft washing flips the equation: very low pressure — roughly garden-hose force — delivering cleaning solutions that break down dirt film and treat organic growth at its source. The solution does the work; the water just applies and rinses it.

Which surfaces get which

• Pressure washing: concrete driveways and sidewalks, pavers, stone patios, pool decks (at moderated pressure).
• Soft washing: stucco, siding of every kind, soffits and fascia, screened lanais and pool cages, painted surfaces, gutters' exteriors.
• Neither — special methods: window glass (pure-water and squeegee work) and solar panels (soft brushes and deionized water only).

What the wrong choice does

High pressure on soft surfaces causes damage that doesn't buff out: permanent wand stripes and gouges in stucco, torn lanai screens, stripped paint, and — most expensively — water driven behind siding and into wall cavities through seams that were never designed to resist a pressurized jet.

The reverse mistake is gentler but still wasteful: soft-wash chemistry alone won't lift years of ground-in grime from a driveway, which is why "low-pressure only" driveway jobs disappoint.

Why soft washing lasts longer on walls

The dark streaks on Florida walls are mostly living organic growth, not dirt. Pressure alone shaves the visible layer off and leaves the base intact — which is why pressure-blasted walls green up again in months. Soft-wash solutions treat the growth itself, so results typically hold dramatically longer.
